Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a condition that occurs when inflammation affects the thick fascial layer on the bottoms of the feet. Plantar fasciitis typically presents as pain at the bottom of the heel that is worse in the morning right after waking. Most people feel that the pain decreases as they get up and move around, but pain usually is persistent and can linger to some degree.
The cause of this condition is still unknown, but occurs at high rates in runners and can also be caused by inadequate arch support in shoes. The prognosis for this condition varies greatly. Symptoms can last from 6 weeks to over a year, depending on the cause and severity of the symptoms.
Early treatment can help reduce recovery time significantly. Treatment includes a regime of stretching, fascial release, and icing the area to decrease the overall inflammation. Arch supports can also help reduce the amount of stress that is put on the fascia and can also improve healing time. Chiropractic adjusts applied to foot and ankle can reduce rigidity of the arch and help maintain mobility.
