Lateral Epicondylitis
Lateral Epicondylitis, aka “Tennis Elbow,” classically presents as pain in the lateral portion of the elbow, more specifically at the muscle insert point of the extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle. If this goes untreated, it can with time extend into the muscles of the extensor digitorum and extensor carpi radialis longus, ultimately leading to limited range of motion as well as weakness in the arm and hand. Lateral epicondylitis is normally the result of repetitive coupled dorsiflexion, radial deviation and supination of the arm. Most commonly seen in tennis players, it is also not limited to hands on occupations.
In the beginning stages of onset, Chiropractic management includes icing and resting to decrease the inflammatory response in the joint and surrounding musculature, which will then lead into a slow progression of stretching techniques, isotonic exercise, myofascial release and mobilization. Patients may also be advised by the Chiropractor to use a brace that will aid in distribution of forces and give proper stability to the elbow joint.
