Carpal Tunnel
Caused by entrapment of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel of the wrist, carpal tunnel syndrome sypically presents with pain associated with numbness and tingling along the palmar surface of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd digits of the hand. Patients may experience worsened symptoms at night and may consequently experience interrupted sleep. There may also be associated weakness in grip strength depending on the severity of the case.
The cause of carpal tunnel is typically due to a history of over-flexing and extending the wrist commonly seen in patients who perform heavy hands-on labor and typing. It is commonly associated, but not always seen, with pregnancy, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, vitamin B deficiency and conditions causing fluid retention in the body. Chiropractic care for carpal tunnel syndrome often includes dietary recommendations, ergonomic and postural training, night splinting and gentle adjusting of the wrist and hand.
