Migraines
The “common” migraine without a preceding aura is more commonly seen than the “classic” migraine that starts with an aura and is most commonly seen in females. The classic migraine typically presents as a unilateral, throbbing ache that is preceded by an aura that can be described as flashing lights, squiggle lines or blind spots. Migraines can vary from mild to disabling, lasting anywhere from 1-3 days. A patient suffering from a migraine will often need to seek a dark, quiet environment, as light and sound can be aggravating. There may also be associated nausea and vomiting.
Factors that trigger a migraine include change in sleep pattern, eating habits, certain medications such as vasodilators, environmental pollutants, hormonal factors and foods such as wine, cheese, chocolate, caffeine and nuts. Management of a migraine includes Chiropractic manipulation, preferably between the period of when the aura occurs to the start of the headache, which can help lessen the intensity of the migraine or even prevent it from starting. Other factors that should be discussed with your Chiropractor include dietary habits, stress management and utilizing other alternative sources such as acupuncture.
However, it is important to note that there are multiple contributing factors to a migraine and these need to be addressed during the exam. In other words, with the help of Chiropractic care, other factors need to be evaluated regarding the patient’s lifestyle, habits and health, in order to receive the most positive results from care.
