Asthma

Caused by an underlying subacute, inflammatory disease, asthma will present itself differently based on each individual case.  Typically, asthma will present with symptoms of chest tightness, wheezing, coughing, and difficulty breathing.  This is often due to exposure to an environmental allergen, stress or exercise-induced.  The patient may also have a history of respiratory infection and /or history of smoking.

Mast cells, which are part of the immune response, release histamine and bradykinin, factors that cause bronchoconstriction and mucosal release that lead to wheezing and shortness of breath.  Most often these chemical messengers are released when the lungs are exposed to very cold or dry air, allergens, dust, pollution, stress, infection, exercise, and certain medications such as aspirin, NSAIDS, ACE inhibitors and Beta blockers.

Depending on the type and severity of the patient’s case, Chiropractic management can be used to decrease the symptoms of asthma through adjusting and dietary and lifestyle management.  Food and allergy testing is an available option to help narrow down causative agents in the environment that are aggravating to the patient’s symptoms.  As always, co-management between the Chiropractor and the patient’s primary care physician is highly recommended.
